I’m also surprised Isabelle bothered to put on a towel since she seemed to be an exhibitionist. Then again, she probably thinks this is neither the time or place considering the seriousness.

@Guesticus. Correct. If Theresa refuses, he wins by default. If she wins, he can claim heresy and nullify the victory.

I think what he mentioned does not actually involve Spellsinging. More a simple duel. During wich he may or may not spellsing.
In either case, Theresa would be at a bad position considering he is from the Military arm, she is not.

Of course they still have option B&T: Barbarian Tiffany. I mean there have to be rules about such a challenge uttered in such a case.

@ Uhl, Being a woman and a noble she can call in a champion.

I guess now is the time for Tiffany to exercise her morals as the Queens champion, no one beats her in a sword fight.

I know the choice may not be as popular but either Neils or Bohr could serve as a perfectly competent champion. Their some what indestructible nature could be a big advantage.

Isn’t that the same spell that evil magician used to cut people into tiny little bits?

I was thinking the same thing. Theresa needs a champion. I just don’t know who… If only there was someone nearby that could do it. Maybe someone who walked in front of the bridal entourage and could be seen as a security detail…

Interesting! Gotta love the ancient idea of “test of arms” as a legal defense.

I agree that surely she must be allowed a champion, though. Which almost makes it make sense… If the ruler’s personal champion can’t defeat the accused in single combat, the ruler lacks the power to uphold the law.

It isn’t actually just, but it makes sense from a feudal perspective.

Meps98, the fact that they’re enhanced in such a way could quite possibly disqualify them as potential champions.

The King has to have a few Ace’s up his sleeve. It’s not like him to play a game he can’t win.
As for Tess i think She will call in Tiff as her champion. Queens do not fight. Because if they lose they lose prestige. Not so if their champion loses. The failer is on the champion. Besides i think Tiff wants to kick his a!s any ways.
I also think that the good guys have a way to mitigate all the magic of the priests. One tired spell singer “Tess” vs the best combat spell singers of the church would be fighting form a poor position.
I think there is a lot of back up waiting off stage.

Hm. I don’t recall there being a rule that women cannot spellsing.

In fact Teresa was spellsinging earlier to maintain security so the royals could plot against Coriander.

I believe that is one of the rules of ancient combat. The challenged gets to make choice of weapons, place and time of dueling and the choice of a champion. This will be interesting.

    Cerulean Lion:
Early on, Terry was actually silenced because of that rule–until Urtica overruled. That was the first serious conflict we saw between Urtica and the Church.

    Ragingagnostic:
“Choice of weapons” involves a duel of honor. This is a law enforcement action, where the state invokes whatever force it can bring to bear, up to and including military action.

I think I can detect a technicality here…if Theresa at one time was indeed MALE…could make the claim for spellsingin’. Regardless, this is gonna get interesting. 🙂

Ya know I’ve sort of been processing this for a while but does anyone else find it funny that one of the most holy artifacts of the faith is essentially a camper van? Or is that just me?

    Gallstone yeah, pretty much.

If I had to guess, to “sing the duet of skillful blades,” is a spellsingers’ duel to the death/trial by combat. The victor is considered to be in the right for the dispute concerned, and the loser is either dead or is legally obligated to yield to the victor’s position.

Either way, Coriander has the upper hand. If it IS to the death, then it’s win win for him, because even in loss he would escape fair punishment. But as others have pointed out, he is likely better prepared for such a duel than Teresa, given his tenure as leader of Rem’s Justice.

Father Pervy thinks he’s got a strong hand, so he’s willing to raise instead of folding. But from what we’ve seen the King is quite a strong player himself, and I suspect this isn’t Poker, it’s Chess, and Urtica thinks many moves ahead.
